I love how Kelly can create both dear and flawed characters to adore. This is an excellent book with an excellent message without being a ‘message” book.

Popsugar24: #19 - A book set in the future

I liked this middle-grade science fiction story [3.5 for me!] a lot. I wasn't sure about its contents, based on the cover, but it drew me in from the first page when Michael Rosario is stealing peaches from the grocery store in preparation for Y2K. Not only does Michael worry about what will happen then, but he worries about how hard his mother works. Twelve-year-old Michael is so relatable as he's small for his age, quiet, helpful, and picked on by others. He also has a caring heart as he feeds ...more

I can see why this won the Newbery! What an ending!
Some of the "technical" descriptions bogged things down a bit, but it's so nice to have a book with a plot and realistic characters. Michael definitely acted like a shy 12-year-old. I could see how today's students would be interested in reading about 1999 (after all, it is the past century!) It jogged my memory a bit, too. I also liked the fact that there were different directions the story could have gone. I found it interesting that Kelly imp

I always enjoy checking out the newest Newbery Medal winners and this one had me hooked from the dedication. I love the connection between Newbery Medal winners of the past: This book is dedicated to "The Laughing Man" from 2010 Newbery winner When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead. Her book, When You Reach Me heavily references 1963 Newbery winner A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle. I love the interplay of winners referencing each other in a Meta way but also that literature is connected throug ...more

I read this one twice; first I listened to the audiobook but got easily distracted (especially during the dialogue parts when they consult AI) and wasn't super into it. But I finished reading it with a hardcopy and liked the end so much, I went back and read the whole thing. Michael is a great character, one whose anxiety and worry, uncertainty and sweetness felt very real. I liked the time travel aspect and thought the execution was well done and can see kids really enjoying this story. I wish ...more

First of all, I’m a sucker for a time travel book. I should have known that I would love this book. This is a book about being your best self and living in the present even if your present is 200 years in the past. (5 hours)

I found this one a little too strange. There’s nothing particularly wrong with it (juvenile book about time travel), it’s just not for me.

I enjoyed reading this one, but it kind of fell flat for me towards the end. It did have a good message about living in the now.

Michael is worried about so many things, but what weighs heaviest on his mind is the possibility of Y2K shutting everything down. One day, Ridge shows up and throws a wrench in things. See, Ridge says he is from the future, but he won’t share much about it because he doesn’t want to disrupt the future based on what he does. Michael struggles with this, and he also struggles about how to recover from mistakes he makes. Get ready for some mind bending thoughts about time and make the most of your ...more
