4.5 stars. Lovely writing and a wonderful introduction to the life and writing of Rachel Carson. I learned a lot and plan to read her books. Beautiful illustrations by Sophie Blackall were welcome throughout. I am interested to see if it appeals to middle schoolers.

I am not a huge fan of verse novels, but this one seems very appropriate to the subject matter, since Rachel Carson was also a lyrical writer and sought to convey the beauty of her subject matter, as well as its scientific accuracy. I read this one in pretty much a single sitting.

Worthwhile and beautifully written.

I will admit I was skeptical about this book. Even 40 pages in I was not hooked. But I continued to read and found that I liked it very much! The verse truly shows the quiet strength of Rachel Carson. And while this is historical fiction facts are present as well. A thoughtful book about her inner strength.
