2022 Newbery Winner
Ok- so, wow.. I haven't loved a Newbery winner this much probably since, 'The One and Only Ivan'
I am an enormous Newbery nerd-- I read blogs that make predictions on which book will win each year as well as watch the ceremony live.
I had this one in my hot little hands literally a few hours after it had been announced, and it was so good.
The one thing that I will note is that as far as middle grade goes, know who you are giving it to- can they handle the premise of Ea ...more

Fantasy and science fiction are not my genre of choice, but I loved the author's debut book, which won a Pura Belpre honor, and knew I wanted to read this one as well. The books are totally different and show how talented Ms. Higuera is.
Twelve-year-old Petra Pena, her younger brother Javier, and her scientist parents are chosen in the year 2061 to leave earth on a spaceship in order to escape Halley's comet, and to colonize the planet Sagan. Sadly, abuela decides she will stay in New Mexico, but ...more

What. The. What.
This book kind of broke me. I have never wanted to simultaneously rip apart and hug a book so freaking much.
This book is hard and, to be honest, I spent the first half of the book not excited to listen to it because everything in the plot was just so horrible. It's the literal end of the world so yeah, this book is not an escapist read by any stretch. Still, I kept returning to the story because its Newbery Medal is well deserved. How can you not love a book that can be read from age 10 - 100 and that combines traditional stories with science fiction???
Newbery awarded dark horse winner. Read on Epic for free-good thing, too, because it’s not available on Libby for another few months and the cost of the book right now is a big no on my budget.
Read in one setting, when I book talked it to my students, they said it was like a combination of ESPERANZA RISING and THE LION OF MARS, and they weren’t wrong.
I always like when books reference other books. This is a story that reminds us that stories tell us who we are, where we’ve been, and who we hope ...more

I read this book because it was an award winner and had been on my TBR list for most of the year. It was so very different than I expected it to be. I thought it would be a hispanic history book when it turned out to be science fiction with humans looking for a new home hundreds of year away.
It was a fun read that kept giving twists and turns in what would we like our future to look like.
