Visions of the things to be
The pains that are withheld for me

Great book for older kids. Very current while also bringing to light stories from the Korean War. I felt like it lost steam when grandma started sharing her story. I think I would have liked it more if it had just included grandpa’s story and saved grandma’s for a sequel.

2021 Realistic/historical fiction

Themes of racism, bullying, family, grief, depression, war, oral history.

Maybe she can find strength in the present in the stories her grandparents tell her about their past--and about their experiences during the Korean War. Told in alternating perspectives ...more

This was a good story. There were a couple things I didn't like about it though. I just don't agree that asking a black person if you can touch their hair is racist or asking where a person's family comes from. Curiosity on my opinion isn't racist. That being said, there definitely are other examples of racism in this book. ...more

Junie Kim struggles with depression, especially after all of the racism she witnesses at her middle school.
A school assignment to interview someone from the silent or boomer generation gives Junie the opportunity to learn more about her family history, and how her grandparents faced the challenges of the Korean War.

I wish I loved this, but I didn’t. I preferred the grandparents’ stories more that Junior’s own story. I do appreciate how the author tries to tackle racism, especially racism agains
