In this Great Depression era novel, Ellie and her family struggle to survive by moving from the town where they’ve lost their livelihoods to the Maine mountains where they can live off the land. After an accident leaves her father in a coma. Ellie takes it upon herself to try to revive him and in the process learns about community, friendship and personal potential in the face of obstacles.

I really enjoyed the latest book by Lauren Wolk, who is becoming one of my favorite Middle Grade authors. I won't bother summarizing the book, as others have done quite well.
I really appreciated the holistic medical information, the characters' trust in it, and the fact that most of the characters also truly respected science. They knew they needed to get the doctor up the mountain; fortunately Ellie had managed to save "the hag," with help from her new friends, and by trusting her own gut. T ...more

One if the best books I have read in a long time. I love Lauren Wolk’s strong female characters, and her writing so many times just makes me stop short to appreciate an especially beautiful passage. This coming of age story has a strong connection to nature, healing and the outdoors, and so was right up my alley. Absolutely loved it.
Beautiful writing and a compelling story but it felt a little tedious to me in the last third. Not sure why.
Maybe it was me. It pushed my boundaries of believability a little bit, too. Still worth reading. Such beautiful, lyrical writing.

Maine 1934, Ellie, her family, and others are living on a mountain, living off the land due to losses so many faced during the depression. Medical care is hard to come by and expensive too. Ellie feels drawn to figuring out cures and care giving practices. Full of great characters, enough adventure and mystery to keep the reader engaged, and issues of gender and emotional health, this is another rich and wonderful read.
This was such a fantastic book. So beautifully written. I listened to the audio and Holly Linneman, did such a fantastic job. I will search her out to listen to other books she's read. I'm so disappointed that it didn't win an award for the book, or audio production. I highly recommend! Ellie is a twelve year old in depression era Maine. They live a very simple, survival mode life. Her father is in a coma, and they are trying to heal him, and hope he is ok. The text is poetically descriptive.

This is a great middle grade novel by the author of Wolf Hollow. Echo Mountain is sweeter to me than the previous novel. Ellie is a strong character and the combination of family moving, accident, young, old and animal was just right. I especially enjoyed this quote: “ Life is a matter of moments, strung together like rain. To try to touch just one drop at a time; to try to count them, or order them or reckon their worth each by each was impossible. To stand in the rain was the thing. To be in i

Good storytelling. Not entirely sure the audience appeal is there. One of those stories that adults love more.
