Whenever I finish a story by Lauren Wolk it takes me a few days before I can start the next book on my night stand. Her writing is so beautiful and her characters so real and endearing that it takes a few days for the magic to completely soak in. This story absolutely captured my heart.

I think this author is really wonderful. Ellie is a strong female character whose family has moved out of town to Echo Mountain during the depression. Her mother and sister miss their nice house and life in town. Ellie and her father have found a home in the mountains. Her father has an accident that Ellie takes the blame for and she is trying to figure out how to help make her father better. She makes a choice to shoulder a burden and it was a hard thing for her. I really liked this book. It’s beautifully written and so many times I wished I could mark sentences for later. But, as I had a copy from the library, I refrained. This book is not as dark as Wolf Hollow, but the characters are equally memorable. My biggest issue (and the reason I didn’t give it 5 stars) is that I think it’s too long for most kids. I know that 4 out of 5 of my kids would lose interest before the end. As an adult reading children’s literature, it was fantastic. I just feel it cou
