3.5. I get what readers enjoy about Lauren Wolk now: her writing is pensive, slow, character-focused. I really enjoyed getting to know this family and the mountain they live on. It was much more uplifting and sunny than I was anticipating; I think the descriptions make it sound like a gloomy book and it's not. I stopped reading 70% of the way and waited a while for the audiobook. It was a nice way to finish the book. Semi-spoiler but not really: I enjoyed this much more when the mom and sister c ...more

This historical fiction novel set in Maine during The Great Depression is just as amazing as Wolk's Wolf Hollow and Beyond the Bright Sea! It's currently at the top of my 2021 Newbery Short List. It is available in April. ...more

Whenever I finish a story by Lauren Wolk it takes me a few days before I can start the next book on my night stand. Her writing is so beautiful and her characters so real and endearing that it takes a few days for the magic to completely soak in. This story absolutely captured my heart.

Ellie and her family move to the mountains after losing everything in the financial crash. Her mother and sister don't take to mountain life like Ellie does and tensions increase after her father is involved in an

I think this author is really wonderful. Ellie is a strong female character whose family has moved out of town to Echo Mountain during the depression. Her mother and sister miss their nice house and life in town. Ellie and her father have found a home in the mountains. Her father has an accident that Ellie takes the blame for and she is trying to figure out how to help make her father better. She makes a choice to shoulder a burden and it was a hard thing for her. This story shows how Ellie trie ...more

Twelve-year-old Ellie has adjusted to the life changes associated with moving from town to the mountains in Maine during the Depression, but accepting that her father is in a coma has proven to be difficult. The remote setting and lack of physical descriptions defaults characters to white. While historical fiction, it’s also a tale of sophisticated family dynamics that is more nuanced than those found in most middle grade books. Elegant prose transports the reader to the time period. Although ...more

I'm quickly becoming a huge Lauren Wolk fan. I've loved her other two books I've read, and this one did not disappoint at all. This is set in the Great Depression in a mountain town where people who once lived a "normal" life have now moved to start completely over. There is an accident early on, and a young girl trying to save the life of her father. Ellie ends up meeting a few other characters, and changing lives forever. I was sad when this one ended. Great read. ...more

After their family loses everything in the Great Depression, they have just enough money to move to a shack on Echo Mountain. Their her former tailor father has to learn how to hunt, plant and provide for his family. Elle has taken to her new life with enthusiasm, but the same can't be said for her older sister and mother who long to be back in the city. Things get even worse when Elle's father is injured in an accident that is unfairly blamed on Elle. While he is in a coma, the rest of the fami ...more

I am very selfish with my 5 stars, but if this book could receive more than 5 stars, I would gladly give them. Excellent story. Extremely well written.
