I struggled to stay engaged at the beginning of this book, but by the end I appreciated all it had to offer. Ware is a kid who demands the world be fair and is ready to go to battle as a knight errant against the unfair. His new summer acquaintance Jolene keeps reminding him that, "Here in the real world nothing is ever fair." In the end the book acknowledges that in a world that is supremely unfair all anyone can do is make some part of it better." A lovely message to hand a child in this world

Ms Pennypacker has packed a lot in the middle grade book. This is a story of friendships, justice, community, imaginative play, habitat, economy and the role of mentors in our lives.

Ware is often happiest by himself--lost in his own world. So when his parents sign him up for Rec camp, he is horrified. It is too crowded, too loud and he just doesn't fit in. But his summer takes a definite turn for the better when he meets Jolene who is building a garden in an abandoned church lot. Ware begins skipping Rec to help Jolene with her garden and to turn the wrecked church into a castle. When the little paradise they have created is threatened by the upcoming auction of the propert

Eleven year old Ware is the introverted dreamer, a creator, a castle builder. He lives by the code of knights and feel he should fight for fairness and justice. Ware's parents don't understand this type of personality--dad is a jock and mom is an extroverted workaholic. Only Uncle Cy, who works in the film industry, understands. Jolene is the realistic, a savior of the earth, gardener, and a repurposer. She lives with the understanding that nothing is fair. Jolene lives with her aunt who doesn't

Sara’s gift is creating memorable characters that deal with heavy stuff in unique stories. Ware and Jolene are truly special creations. This novel will be another favorite for young and old readers. It is a transformational story about accepting yourself and making true friends. A worthy follow up to the beloved Pax.
I like this author's writing style.
