Wow! I love children's poetry, and this book is amazing. Part of the "amazingness" was Sophia sitting on the couch next to me, reading aloud each "reverso" poem, with Aerie peeking over the back so she could read along. For a CHILDREN's poetry book, no less. The cleverness of this new form of poetry is delightful. Each of the poems in the book are about a fairy tale, and each reads the same from top to bottom and bottom to top, but mean different things. (Capitalization and punctuation can chang ...more

Very clever fairy tale poems that can be read forward and in reverse with very different meanings. A bit uneven but there are a couple of exceptionally good ones that I would share with students. Unfortunately, I can't remember the names of the three I really enjoyed without looking at the book again! ...more

Marilyn Singer creates a new type of poem, reverso, which are identical poems written forward and backward with only minor changes in punctuation and capitalization. In Mirror Mirror, Singer revisits well-known fairy and folk tales like "Little Red Riding Hood" and "The Frog Prince"-- her reverso poems cleverly show the story from two different points of view. The concept is fascinating, but some poems work better than others. ...more

This is a book of reverso poetry. When you read a reverso down, it is one poem. When you read it up, with changes only in punctuation and capitalization it is a different poem. All poems are based on fairy tales and tell two sides of the story.

She will be reading aloud from this at the ALSC Poetry BLast at ALA Annual in June 2010.

Concept is outstanding, and its a type of poem you don't see very often. Illustrations are wonderful to. Some of the poems don't reflect the changing points of view as good as others. ...more

Very clever. This is a book you want to read and look at over and over. It can also spur some discussion about point-of-view with children. Both the art and the verse were well done.

This book is based on nursery rhymes that has 2 different images for each poem, each referring to the poem written one way--and then in reverse. I felt that some of the poems/reverse poems were really forced, which made me not enjoy the book in its entirety as much.

So many uses for this brilliant book of "reversos," poems that read both from the top of the page and the bottom. The fairy tale theme give opportunities to hear both sides of the same story and the changes only in punctuation and capitalization are ready-made for grammar lessons. Each reverso shares the pages with its opposite and both have a half-page illustration. Gr. 2-6. ...more

The poetry was cool, but I was really entranced by the mirrored illustrations. This would fit in a unit about folktales, poetry, poetic novels or wordplay. So many uses! My daughter agrees, this one is a keeper.
