Melody loves words but cannot communicate them for years as a result of living with cerebral palsy. Loving parents, an excellent neighbor/care-giver, and ultimately a great teacher and the individual teaching assistant Melody works with, her life explodes with opportunities. An excellent choice for summer reading allowing middle schoolers to examine their personal prejudices and assumptions so often made by us all.

Intriguing, humbling, exciting, shocking, outstanding... These are words that come to mind as I think of Sharon Draper's book "Out of My Mind". As I read, I entered deeply into the perspective of an intelligent girl who is underestimated by all of those around her. Yes, she had people who believed in her, but Draper takes us deeply into the mind of Melody and we follow along her rejections, her fears and her grit. Told from point of view of a girl with cerbal palsy. Very well done, not 'poor me' book. Really enjoyed and learned from it.
