This book reminds me a lot of Stuck in Neutral by Terry Trueman, only it is appropriate for younger children, as it doesn't have such a devastating ending.
My personal connection with this book is rather ambivalent. I have only taught (for a significant amount of time) one girl with cerebral palsy and, as far as I could tell, she did not comprehend much of the material that was in the regular 6th grade lessons. Heartbreaking and triumphant all at the same time. Melody is an eleven year old girl with smarts and sass; she also has cerebral palsy. The book chronicles her struggles to fit in at a normal school and show the world what she really knows and is capable of. I thought the beginning was a bit uneven and hard to get into, but around page 50, the story picks up. I couldn't put this book down. I had to finish it today. What an inspirational and truly touching story and, most of all, character. Ms. Melody will be with me forever.
