Auma is a 13-year-old girl growing up in a Luo village in Kenya at the height of the AIDS epidemic. Her family has always struggled with paying expenses, even with her dad's good job in the city. Auma dreams of getting a running scholarship to a local high school, her only chance of being able to afford higher education and avoid being trapped in marriage at a young age. I am honestly torn on this one and whether to include it in my seminars. On one hand, it is an #ownvoices title and offers a world perspective that is sorely lacking in literature for this age group.
