Set in 1837, this book has quite a few things to recommend it: a marvelous kitten at its centerpiece, intrigue and adventure on the high seas, and heroism on the part of man and beast. Jacob Tibbs, the runt of the litter from Mrs. Tibbs, the seagoing cat belonging to Captain Natick, boards the ship because the captain's daughter, Melissa, begs her father to let him stay.
