I was reluctant to read Fire because I loved Graceling so much, but this companion novel was better than the first.

Fire, an outcast, with her vibrantly beautiful hair color and exquisite beauty are indicators of her monster genetics. She is considered dangerous because of her powers of mind control. She's the only human monster left, and she lives far out in the country where she is safe from those who fear her and would harm her. The fantastic story unfolds as a mysterious stranger tries to hurt Fire, and clues to his identify take Fire out of her safety zone. Archer's loves Fire and will do anything to kee ...more

Wow, excellent "companion" to Graceling, but easily read as a stand-alone. Great fantasy, with the main character a gorgeous, powerful, lady "monster" with hair the color of fire. Detailed fantastical setting, exotic characters, romance, and adventure make this an excellent choice for young adults and adults. ...more

This is probably more of a 3 1/2 stars. I did enjoy this one to some extent, but not nearly as much as Graceling. There was a bit too much on the fictional war for my tastes, which is the same reason I didn't enjoy Lord of the rings as much as I might have otherwise. ...more

I enjoyed Fire, but not more than Graceling! Except, maybe I liked the romance in this one better because Brigan was so wonderful, and more my type than Po. I'd note that this book feels to me like it holds the most appeal for a little older of a crowd than Graceling. I'm *really* looking forward to Bitterblue, as she was a favorite character of mine from Graceling. ...more

I didn't rate this book very highly because I didn't appreciate the casual immorality and the abundance of illegitimate children as a result of those loose morals. I would feel uncomfortable recommending because of references to immorality, rape and homosexuality-especially for a younger YA reader. I thought it was a promising story, and I hoped it would be more like a Shannon Hale/Goose girl novel. I skimmed the last third of the book because it started o feel too soap opera-ish for me. ...more

I think I enjoyed this even more than Graceling. I think Fire is a more fully developed character. Her travails of dealing with her power and her fight to overcome her fear that she will become a monster like her father are riveting.
