An amazing, moving book about Freedom Summer 1964, in Greenwood, Mississippi. A fascinating hybrid of nonfiction and fiction, Wiles blends a historical fiction story about a 12 year old girl and her family with the story of a 12 year old African American boy and blends that with images, song lyrics and information about racial relations, civil rights, the Vietnam War, Lyndon Baines Johnson, Muhammad Ali, and more. More than any other book I've read about the early 60s, this one helped me more fu ...more

I loved this book! Every child in the United States and perhaps other places as well should read this. It is piercing look into Freedom Summer. Not only does the reader get a personal view through Sunny's eyes, but also informational views and quotes from primary sources. This would be a fabulous choice for a group read for Black History month or an American history class. Well done Deborah Wiles! ...more

I hope young readers will not hesitate to read this because of its length. The story concerns a family in Greenwood, Miss. the summer of the civil rights push to register everyone. The plot would appeal to middle school students. Interspersed are photos and news stories from the dramatic era which present history in a manner which will appeal to readers.

The summer of 1964 - this was to be a summer unlike any other. Sunny's family is changing and so is her hometown. The "invaders" have arrived with the promise of Freedom Summer, but it is not the carefree summer she imagined. Changes in the law escalate tension in town. The story is intertwined with photos, song lyrics, and documents of that Freedom Summer. ...more

The second book in the Sixties trilogy, Revolution, lived up to and exceeded my expectations. Complex and well-paced, Wiles presents many facets of the race relations centered on Greenwood Mississippi in the summer of 1964. As with the first book, the story is supplemented and supported by photos, quotes, songs, and mini bios of the people in action at that time. Will need more time to let it sift through me.

I loved this one even more than Countdown. I loved seeing the connections between the two books, but also seeing time progress. The story is powerful, and the primary source documents add so much to the telling.

So good. Original source material. Freedom Summer from the perspective of a 12 year old white girl and a 14 year old African American boy. One of those books everyone should read.
