Time for reading has been difficult to carve out, with two very active toddlers requiring my love and attention all day every day, so I’m glad I was finally able to make my way through this lengthy final installment in The Tawny Man Trilogy.

There were times when I found the pacing here to be quite slack, and some of what I’d always experienced from Robin Hobb’s best work — a tension that balanced out how much she likes to take her time — was less present than I’d want.

But in this book’s final

I had a few expectations as to an ending, and was greatly satisfied to not see the ending as I had imagined.

I love happy endings. I really do. And I love them even more when they are preceded by so much heartache, misery, and sacrifice. Such a happy reversal was not forced in this novel. I really am so pleased with how this turned out!

I will be the first to say that when I read Farseer trilogy, I didn't really like Fitz there. He was a brat. Too many things just happened around him. He kept managing all sorts up super feats. He was an ass to Molly.(and a lot of other people). I just didn't like him. and maybe that is a naivete of mine, that I want to like my protaganists, but there we are.

Anyway, in the Tawny Man trilogy, the world-building by Hobbs suddenly reaches up to me and

Julia don't read this!!!!
I LOVED this second (or third!) time round. Whilst the first two books in this series seem slightly parochial, this third book is an epic masterpiece. Having said that, the best moments are the character moments, as so always with Robin Hobb. The chapter towards the end when Fitz brings the Fool back to life and then the Fool takes Fitz back to Girl on a Dragon and gives Fitz back all the memories he put into Girl on a Dragon is just beautiful. I was crying my eyes out!
