Mini-Review:

3.5 Stars for Narration by John Lee
4 Stars for Concepts
2.5 Stars for Story Execution

Narration:
- John Lee was fine. The problem was that his particular narration style did not fit the story. The more I learned about the story setting, the more I was thrown by Lee's accents & narration.
- There are a handful of great sentences & phrases. Overall, the story was not written to be spoken out loud and that comes across clearly in the narration.

Story:
- Attempt at noir setting was mostly s

This was my first China Mieville book. It may not have been the best book to start with. From information I've gleaned since, some of the concepts used in this world have been used in previous books and it would be useful knowledge to have.

I spent the first third of this book debating whether to continue or not and the rest of the book wondering how I could have ever thought of giving up on it.

I can attest to the fact that this is the only plot-based novel AND murder mystery I've ever read that I. could.not.put.down. Haven't read through anything so fast for a while now.

I mean, one physical geography and two entirely separate psychogeographies, complete with their own borders?

Sign me up.

This author constantly challenges his readers in his books, he makes you think as you bask in the awe of his creativity and imagination.

Couldn't put it down. This is how storytelling is done right. Not formulaic or a copy of what's already been done successfully in the past in an attempt to cash in, but a twisting on something familiar, a fantastic element added to the story that makes it something truly new, something utterly unique, something unexpected unlike most of the drivel being produce

probably worth a 3.5/5

I first read this and gave up after 100 pages, not my thing but after persistence from a friend ive re-read it and enjoyed it this time around.

The opening 70 pages werent for me, not enough explanation but once the girls parents were introduced to the reader i got the jist of it.

re-read 5/5
