I so enjoyed this!
A tale of 7 pilgrims to a mysterious planet's shrike temple, set in a sci-fi future....really a character study as they each tell their tale of what motivated them to take the journey.
I found I was pacing myself, reading one story at a time, so as to savor it, even when I really desired to race ahead.....wonderful book! Cant wait to find out what ends up happening to them!

While well written, I found it depressing and the ambiguous ending left me cold. The narration was good. There were a couple of characters I thought the Shrike should eat. Others just sad.

Seven pilgrims to the Time Tombs on Hyperion each tell the story of how and why they came to be in search of the Shrike. A kind of Canterbury Tales in space but with lots of SF technology and far future politics. An excellent read but make sure you have the sequel, Fall of Hyperion, to hand as the ending is abrupt and you will want to keep on reading to find out why the Shrike is so important.

A couple of people told me that this is one of the greatest sci-fi books ever written, and I have to agree. The writing style, the plot, and even the characters were amazing.
