[close] I discovered this book over our last winter break. I thought it was going to be about someone who smoked too much marijuana, but it turned out to be way more interesting than that. It broke my heart and upset me so much that I continue to carry on an argument with it as the months go on. To what extent do we have to accept the limitations of our desires? I wish the author were still alive so I could argue with him.

I started this book last week while browsing in a London bookstore. By the fourth or fifth page, it had reached into some core part of me where its grip remains, though I finished the book days ago. This is a story for all of us who woke up one day to the miracle of words. I find myself going back now, rereading chapters, looking at online reviews, arguing with the main character about his decisions: remaining with his wife, letting his lover go, not fighting harder for his daughter.
