When I first read this in 2007 I thought it was one of the best books I'd ever read. I met with it again in 2021 with a little trepidation. Would it live up to the hype in my head? The answer is yes. It is still astonishing.

Highly readable, clever modern Gothic novel - Setterfield's first, amazingly! Looking forward to her next. I've heard people dismiss her for "thinking she's writing Jane Eyre," but I found the author's tone to be quite light, as when the doctor diagnoses Margaret with being too overwrought by romantic novels and prescribes her ten pages of Arthur Conan Doyle per night - Setterfield knows the book is a melodrama and she's enjoying it; so should we.

The Thirteeth Tale is constantly funny. Even up to the part when Margaret sees herself in the house mirror, and she expects everyone except herself to kidda freak. It’s funny. I think I have a copy of this book The Thirteeth Tale and its truly wonderful. I should recommend this book to any first timer read, who loves or feels they’d love reading books.
