This is only the third graphic novel I've read (not counting those Archie comics when I was in middle school). "Fun Home" only reinforces the idea in my head that graphic novels are necessarily about disturbing things and that they're autobiographical (I know, small sample). I don't know if the medium allows the author to share ideas/events that would be too difficult to express only in words...
