When I picked up Smoke and Bone By Laini Taylor I thought "oh great Angels and Devils falling in love, bring on the biblical quotes." But this book takes what we would think of turns it on it's head. This is a story of a girl who's world is less then average. Her day consists of school, home work and oh yeah, running errands collecting teeth for her half human half beast adoptive father who lives in between worlds. Very intelligently written with only a hint of the conventional views of angels a ...more

From page one you are instantly drawn into the amazing world that Laini Taylor has penned. A world filled with imagination and fraught with mystery and danger. Filled with exotic world locales like Paris, Morocco, and Prague. A world where at first glance everything is normal, but if you take the time to look at the shadows, you will discover a world you never knew. In this world we find Karou, a blue haired 17 year old girl painted with tattoos studying art in Prague. Karou is such a beautiful ...more

Review: Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor I didn’t think I’d end up loving it as much as I did. All I knew about the series was it was about angels and devils – not really a genre that normally appeals to me. But boy was I wrong! I loved this book. With some authors, they make sure you remember you’re reading a novel about supernatural beings. Yes, Taylor does mention angels and demons but it’s more than that; she makes her characters come to life with their own depth and faults that the ...more

It’s hard to describe this book. It starts off as a mystery. Karou is a 17 year old, blue-haired, art student living in Prague who has a secret life. She frequently abandons her friend’s to “run errands” and they have no idea where she goes, but if they took a long look at her sketchbooks they would discover that she’s part of another world. Karou was raised by monsters, called chimaera in this book. Her father-figure, Brimstone, sends her around the world collecting teeth for reasons beyond Kar ...more

Wow... Wow. Laini Taylor can write. And it's no surprise that she cites Stephanie Perkins, author of equally delectable teen reads like "Anna and the French Kiss", because their writing style and syntax are very similar, even though their genres are completely different.

"Daughter of Smoke & Bone" is a wildly imaginative roller coaster of a story, if that roller coaster was set in another reality and everyone sitting around you either had angel wings, wolf heads, or cloven hooves. Taylor blows it

I was in the mood for a different genre. This was a nice change. A clear first book in a trilogy. Lots of exposition. I suspect that the action really starts in the next book, which I will likely be checking out soon.

Clever plot about different worlds and different creatures. Bit of a Romeo and Juliet vibe happening as well.

The story and details of this book are undeniable odd, but Laini Taylor's prose is entrancing, enthralling, and just plain beautiful. I couldn't help but adore Karou, the protagonist, or to be drawn into the story. I would recommend this novel to anyone looking for a young adult book that is uncommon and uncommonly lovely. ...more
