I’ve seen it happen over and over again: a black person gets killed just for being black, and all hell breaks loose. I’ve Tweeted RIP hashtags, reblogged pictures on Tumblr, and signed every petition out there. I always said that if I saw it happen to somebody, I would have the loudest voice, making sure the world knew what went down.
Now I am that person, and I’m too afraid to speak.

Book #50 Read in 2017
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
This is an excellent book which I would recommend to young adult and adults readers alike. It is a powerful read. Starr witnesses her friend Khahil being shot to death by a police officer who thought he had a gun (it was a hairbrush). Starr needs to tell what happens but that is easier said than done. This book accurately portrays the difficulty of race relations and police brutality. Well done. I borrowed this book from the public library.

Journey into the life a teenager and her family during some very poignant experiences. Creates a basis for dialog on life happenings so that gives a glimpse of experiences outside of your own experience. Some were interesting, some were confusing and many were just oh so sad. Please read this book when you have the time to really devote to delving into the feelings this will generate.

Everyone needs to read this book
As a white person, this book can be uncomfortable to read at times. But that's why it's so important. I'm not about to say I totally get the struggle now that I've read this because I know there's no way I can. I put off reading this for a very long time for many reasons, but I shouldn't have. Starr is such a well-written, complex character, and the racial tension is deftly handled. So many lessons for each of us here.
