All the Feels for this little beauty! This is a great science fiction story with great world building and a wide ranging cast of misfits and alien life. Oh-and chimps! I can see I am going to have to go back and give Illuminae another chance. Since I first attempted it, I’ve read a lot more sci fi plus I listened to it on audio and it confused me. So I will be reading the book with my eyes this time!

A new YA SF series from the authors of the amazing Illuminae books.
The Aurora Academy is the training grounds for the Aurora Legion. Tyler Jones is in the final year of his training there. Tyler is also at the top of every class and bound to get the cream of the crop in the draft for his squad during the final year. But a last minute misadventure that has him rescuing a young woman from a derelict spacecraft leads to him missing the draft and getting a set of misfits to round out his squad. He w ...more

After the excellent Illuminae Files trilogy, I had high expectations for this new novel from Kaufman and Kristoff. Maybe too high...
First, the good. Aurora Rising is a fun and fast-paced scifi adventure featuring a motley crew of space cadets thrown into a deadly plot. Tyler Jones, top of his senior class, saves a young girl, Aurora, from a legendary ship that disappeared over 200 years ago. However, due to this courageous act, he misses the Draft, which would have allowed him to choose all ...more

I was rather impressed at how much this held my attention. There was a few moments of "typical" teen/YA actions/thoughts/things said "bee-bro" for example. As well as some repetitiveness, see previous example.
But over all it was a good book, with a very interesting story. And I am very much so looking forward to see what happens next. ...more

The audio cast was excellent, and I felt like it added a lot to the story. I get easily tired of YA, but this had a decent explanation about why all of the protagonists are young, and the characters were engaging and didn't annoy me :) Of course, this book will always be compared to the Illuminae trilogy, which is rough, because that is such a unique series that it's hard to follow. And not really fair - this is a good story that stands well on its own (although wow -hopefully not a long wait ti

The Illuminae Files books were fast-moving and totally enjoyable (except for the end of the series, which I didn't care for much) so I was excited to read this book.
And while Aurora Rising was fast-moving and enjoyable, there were things in the book that I didn't care for:
-I was fed up with these terms before I was a quarter into the book: "Captain Hotness", "bee-bro", "dimples". If they never reappear in future installments, I will be very happy.
-I don't mind multiple PoV stories; however, I w ...more
