4.5 it's almost a 5 but it just doesn't give me a 5 star feeling and you need that feeling when giving our 5 stars.
I think at 60% I really got on board. Up to then I was thinking hm why is this so hyped? At 60% I just settled in with the book and got more into the story. It shouldn't take 60% to feel settled with a book but fantasy series especially new ones can be a bit of a grind to get in as there's lots of things to get into. I did see someone mention this isn't a slow burn and I agree. Thi ...more

My Grade: B+ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2 stars, rounded up to 5 for Goodreads. For me, the star of this book is the suave MMC Kingfisher and his hilarious sense of humor. I can't even count the number of times I actually laughed out loud, especially considering how dark this book gets. And it does get super dark!
What's Inside: Dark faeries, magical elements, vampires, lush surroundings, a strong FMC, lots of gore and violence, and a terrific cast of supporting characters.

At the risk of sounding like that person I just wanna say that I'm usually really picky with my 5 star reads. But lo and behold here we are.
Did this book start off super slow to me? Yes. Did I want to dnf it multiple times throughout the beginning? Also yes. Should I have DNFed it? Absolutely not. Oh goodness, this book had me in a chokehold. This is the closest I've felt a book has come to ACOTAR level emotions and storyline. Enemies to lovers, fated mates, war, Fae, vampires, gods, it has it all. I loved the twists and turns, the hidden storylines and the reveals! I couldn't put it down towards the end and now I'm eagerly awaiting book 2!

44/100
Absolutely INSUFFERABLE protagonist. Whines about everything, has not even a hint of understanding for anyone else and looks down on anyone and anything around her, this all while she herself is dumb as a cave troll. Could not stand her.
It got a bit better towards the end if the book, but not enough so that I will read the sequel. Too bad, because I really enjoyed the world building and the plot.
