Review after re-read:

3 stars. Still three stars but I did enjoy this more this second time around. I only reread it because my bestie really wants me to continue on with this series and I genuinely remembered nothing about this one. LOL. Violet was much more interesting this time and the plot had my attention more. Plus, the dragons are still very much the best things about this book.

I am going to have to include Rebecca Yarros among my top favorite authors. I didn't even realize all the books of hers that I've read, but I've read six and I gave all of them 5 stars.

I love me some dragons! I loved the world-building, how the dragons bonded with their riders and even picked them. I loved all of the gryphons and other creatures. The characters...LOVED Violet. Thought I hated Xaden but just had to change my mind by the end of the book.

The character development, the plot, the world building, the dialogue was all very juvenile and poorly done.
I spent the entire reading experience waiting for things to happen or for the story to get better and it just never did.
I was waiting to understand why the world was so cruel? what happened in the past to make this dragon academy necessary and so cut throat? if you need bodies, why are we wasting them in this academy?

WHAT A BOOK! Fantasy is not a normal genre for me, but since I loved the Acotar series and all of the hype around this one, I figured it was a must read. And they were not wrong!! The beginning was a tad slow but once I was finished, I realized all of that information at the beginning is important for the rest of the story. Cannot love this one enough and after that ending, cannot wait for the second part!!!
