Beware of fungus...It can be smarter than you think...
This was my first book of T. Kingfisher and it got hold of me like the fungus got hold of Maddie. The story was at times very tense that you couldn't stop reading. It felt like you were there with Alex Easton, being in the mansion of the Usher and trying to solve this mystery that had a hold on Maddie and Roderick. The hares were downright creepy.

3 stars. Gorgeous writing and this definitely had some creepy moments but I honestly was kind of bored. I haven’t read the Edgar Allen Poe story that this is a retelling of and I feel like that maybe would’ve enhanced my enjoyment a bit if I had. Not sure. The main character, Alex, was pretty interesting and I liked them quite a bit. Some of the side characters were fascinating as well. The tone and setting of the story were great but again something about this was missing for me personally.
What Moves the Dead is creepy as hell! I had a little bit of hard time at the beginning and I was thinking about DNFing it. I'm glad I continued reading because it was creepy and weird and unsettling.
I think we got a little bit too much information about this fictional country for this not even 200 page book. But after about 20% this book got so much better! Just be aware of body horror because it's definitely in there!
I have not read The Fall of the House of Usher so I can't compare these two. ...more
