“A Warden falls. The house calls someone new–someone lost or lonely, someone whose home was stolen or sold or who never had a home in the first place. It calls them, and they come, and they are never homeless again.”

I absolutely loved this! This is a testament to perseverance because the first 20% I wasn’t really feeling it and then suddenly BAM! I was ALL IN! I adored Opal and Arthur as MCs. This was gothic, a ghost story, magical and a mystery, definitely all about the underdog. This was a great example of the found family trope. I love the fact this author writes original and standalone novels, somewhat of a rarity in the fantasy genre. Brilliant. Many thanks to Netgalley for an arc of this book.
I liked this audiobook fairly well. It was an interesting enough storyline to pull me through but not so intricate for me to get lost while listening and working. It was nice to hear a fantasy book that wasn’t overly juvenile or excessively creepy. Nicely done, although the footnotes (at least in the audio) didn’t feel all that necessary.
Starling House was 4 star read for me—a novel of mystery, magic, and dark beasts. I really enjoyed the setting Harrow built here. Her writing, too, was undeniably lyrical and evocative. So, then, why not 5 stars? In a word? Pacing. I’m glad I stuck with it because the second half was much more plot driven and I really got into it. I don’t doubt that, for some readers this will be 5 stars. I enjoyed it overall!
