I thought this book was okay, but I feel like it was one that needed to be written. I did sob like a baby. In my car. On my way to work. It's fine. I think this book was great in the way that it shows a woman's mentality when she is in an abusive relationship. Because it is true, a lot of people think it's easier to leave than it really is. One of my favorite books Colleen Hoover has written. This was an intense exploration of toxic relationships and what makes them harmful. The author's note truly made this book hit harder because it was based on Hoover's own family experiences. This book is HEAVY, but oh so important. The naked truth... Wow this book really hits you in the feels. It's heartbreaking going through Lily's story. Ryle is portrayed well in this as well. She did a really good job or accurately writing a story and how this kind of situation really plays out. I loved the ending. ...more

I have a lot to say, and it took me a bit to figure out how to form this review. I’ve battled back and forth about if what I didn’t like was the content or if it was the writing. Of course, I don’t like the content because it is a story of abuse and manipulation at the end of the day. But well written, it would have felt different to me. The writing felt cheap. It felt like Hoover was saying, “if he’s hot it’s okay that he is written in red fl Spoilers ( I have no idea how far down to space 🤷‍♀️)

I have a lot to say, and it took me a bit to figure out how to form this review. I’ve battled back and forth about if what I didn’t like was the content or if it was the writing. Of course, I don’t like the content because it is a story of abuse and manipulation at the end of the day. But well written, it would have felt different to me. The writing felt cheap. It felt like Hoover was saying, “if he’s hot it’s okay that he is written in red flags.” (I put a red tab every time there was a red flag and a pink tab every single time scrubs were mentioned. By the end, I ran out of both). The message was a message that many people could have related to but felt cheapened by the dialogue. If Ryle didn’t come home in scrubs as often, would he be as irresistible? Also, who comes home in scrubs?? Why would anyone want to bring the filth of the hospital home?? If Ryle had ANY redeeming qualities at all, the story of his past would pull at your heartstrings in some way, but he doesn’t. The other problem I had with this novel is the end after she’s given birth and they are both holding their daughter in their hands and she tells him over and over “What if Emmerson was the one being beaten on?” Once would have sufficed but Hoover beats Ryle down creating a very uncomfortable moment (cringe worthy instead of the actual feelings of her finding her own voice and footing) and makes it feel like she is preaching at the audience. Also, often, it felt like Hoover thought the reader was stupid because she felt the need to spell out messages to you. I don’t need to see the metaphor and then have the author tell you it was a metaphor shortly after to figure it all out. To categorize this as a romance is the biggest folly of them all. To call it romance, romanticizes abuse and manipulation. There was no romance, only escape from violence and not even true escape at that because now she is forced to share a child with this man, and also a second book was written. ...more
