Why I Decided to Read This:
I've read a couple V.E. Schwab books, and she is an amazing writer, so I'm excited to read more of her books.

I really really liked this book. It’s really a 4.5. The only reason it isn’t a 5 star is because of the repetitive in the narration. Not necessarily a bad thing but just not my thing.

Anyone who knows me knows I love anything of French origin. Add in a bit of magic, a fluctuating timeline and a bit of romantic dalliance and I am on board.

Shelves: death-as-love-interest

I enjoyed this book, I really did. Sometimes I'll put down the book in the middle of reading just to have a debate with myself due to the nuances in the book. It is essentially a memoir of a girl named Addie LaRue. And you read about how she fought to get control of her life, to live, to experience, to see the world and how she formed various short-lived relationship as no one can remember her.

Nuance Characters
On to her character, I can't help but sometimes wonder if she was selfish. She begged I enjoyed this book, I really did. Sometimes I'll put down the book in the middle of reading just to have a debate with myself due to the nuances in the book. It is essentially a memoir of a girl named Addie LaRue. And you read about how she fought to get control of her life, to live, to experience, to see the world and how she formed various short-lived relationship as no one can remember her.

Nuance Characters
On to her character, I can't help but sometimes wonder if she was selfish. She begged for basically immortality, got mad when she had to pay the price as part of the deal, got mad at the Lord of the darkness, Luc, as if he's not a god that only deals in soul. That's basically the nature of what he is. Calling him evil is like saying the water is wet. He was what he was and so I don't see him as bad for what he did. At the same time, I completely understands how Addie can feel manipulated. Her anger is not wholly unfounded either. And I think this is what I like the most about Luc and Addie.

The romance
Addie x Henry: The bad
Not sure if I'm fully sold on the love between Addie and Henry. Did they fall in love because of their circumstance or because of their circumstance they fell in love? Would they still love each other if they weren't under the curse?

Addie x Luc: The bad
Luc and Addie have imbalance power dynamic. Addie will always wonder if Luc had an ulterior motive for whatever he'd done for her. She'll always feel he had something over her. Unless the playing field is leveled, it will be a tumultuous relationship. And because of how headstrong they both were, their relationship will always be volatile

Addie x Luc: The Good
They fit each other well in the sense that they were the only one who understood each other the most in the word. And Addie is no longer human with the long life she had live, which made the pair more fitting. Luc's not a human and he did not love the way a human does. In his own, albeit territorial way, he did love Addie.

Addie x Henry: The Good
Then there was Henry, who could be a steady presence, maybe in a different lifetime if things were different. There's was warmth and understanding in their relationship. He's someone Addie can rely on.

If Addie and Henry were like a flicker of candle in the dark, Addie and Luc were a flame that would burn them both, so bright it could blind you. I don't think either were perfect for her but story wise, I want a love story that is so great it shadows everything (basically dramatic shit). So I'm more team Luc 😛

Ending
I thought the ending would be more epic, or that someone/anyone would die, but it's a bit more melancholy. and I like the open end. As how a tale should be, with the spool of story still spinning and spinning. ...more

A beautifully written book. This is a story that had a good start and a good ending, but the middle dragged a bit. I found two of the main charaters, Addie and Henry, to be likable and engaging when they were introduced. Even the villain of the story was engaging and likable at times. I really liked how realistically the author described Henry and his depression. Tis is my first book by this author and would definitely read another V.E. Schwab creation.
