What Members Thought

When I first started this book, I had to put it down for a few days. I just wasn't pulled into the story. But after I pushed myself to continue reading the book and Anthony Doerr's beautiful prose washed over me, I gained new respect for the imagery and details he included in the descriptions of the characters and their surroundings. Wow! I got really involved in this story. I've waited a long time to get this from the library and it was worth it! I figured that that the boy would save the girl and they would live happily ever after....surviving WWII.
The simple pleasures that are described in the book made me sit back and realize how much we have and how we miss so much of it by cell phones, 14-hour work days and the ever ending social engagements of our children. A walk with a loved one, a story being read to you.

This is one of those books that 5 stars just doesn’t seem sufficient. I feel like all the others need one taken away just to measure up. This book will stay with me forever. It made me cry….that’s rare. I wish I’d read it sooner.
