I don't really understand the hype for this book. There were certainly glimmers of great writing (view spoiler)but I was never completely engaged and by the last third, the part that the whole book was building to, it was really a slog.

The detail of Anthony Doerr's prose is remarkable. I listened to the audio version of this book and it was a joy to listen to every precise description that embellished the story without being overbearing or making it dull. War is a horror and the people who end up fighting them are boys who do not have an option to disagree. This is beautifully depicted in the book. What would you chose?
