“Open your eyes and see what you can with them before they close forever.”
This is a slow moving but well told story. It sneaks up on you as it weaves all the different storylines. I found myself holding my breath, waiting for all the paths to converge.
There are two sides to every story. But when we talk about children and WWII, the stories....they are never pretty. And this story is just ugly - the ugly side of war. It's good reminder that those that did those horrid things to some, did atrocit ...more

Just an exquisite book. There are parts of the novel that are still pulsing, quietly demanding that I think about them more deeply, revisit particular passages, remember characters' thoughts - what is bravery, really? What is living vs merely surviving? Aren't we all just collections of molecules, chemicals and stardust, protecting ourselves within the confines of a cleverly constructed puzzle house? This is a fabulous read. The author builds tension throughout and it is easy to feel for the characters

After reading this book I just went through the reviews. One review which gave this book remarkably low marks complained that this book mixed fantasy/mystery into history. I disagree with that portrayal of this book. While there was some mysticism about a stone in the book, it was neither fantastical nor was it mysterious. It did create a secondary plot line, running alongside the fact that this book is about WWII, but it was not ~magic~ and it did not take away from the historical fiction genre
