I have one major issue with this...and it's the writing believe it or not. The writing feels young...the MC feels young (She's mid-twenties, but she feels younger because of the way she is written)...and then the content smacks you in the face like a ton of bricks, and it is NOT young. Am I even making sense? I'm not entirely sure of an alternative way to describe what I am talking about. It was jarring to say the least.

TW***There were so many times where I wanted to DNF this book to the point that I could only read it in small bursts. I do find that I have a hard time DNFing books and because I wanted it to count towards books read I kept persisting. I am going to jump around a bit because I have a lot of thoughts about this book. This is a damaging book. For no reason except brutality for the reason of brutality was there a rape scene. The book opens with an orgy essentially. The King has his "saddles" (not sure why they needed to be called that and frankly every time they were called that I rolled my eyes) which are his harem. Which I can understand because harems have been in literature FOREVER but calling them saddles wasn't clever. It felt dumb.
The magic system seemed really cool because it was a Midas retelling and the story overall was interesting but the journey there really ruined it. There were moments that I actually enjoyed but they were few and far between and literally consisted of them journeying through the snow while you saw Auren as a regular human instead of the Kings favored.
She is a living gold touched person. I HATED THE AMOUNT OF TIME THEY REFERRED TO HER GILDED (view spoiler) ( can't even type it out normally because my mom is my Goodreads friend and it's stupid and crass. ) There were so many cringy moments and a lot of moments that felt completely unnecessary. I hate having such mixed thoughts on this because the story had so much potential but it got ruined by trying to put too much shock value in. Gild was a fabulous book. I absolutely loved it. Auren's world is a dark and gritty place with a gold sheen to hide it. I could not put this down. I was entranced. At times this wasn't an easy read, make sure to read the triggers if you need to, but the hard parts were executed extremely well.

3.5 is the true rating but the fact that the last chapter is from Midas’s POV tilted my hand towards marking 4.

This book is primary from the POV of Auren, who has been turned gold by Midas but lives. Honestly for
Most of the book I felt like not a lot was happening. I’m glad I pushed through though because the last quarter of the book was so interesting! The characters introduced and Auren’s interaction was so much more than I thought it was going to be. I’ll probably read the second book.

I will be honest; I picked this up on Kindle Unlimited because I liked the cover. I know, never judge a book by its cover, but I am SO GLAD I DID! I am basically obsessed with this series, and I have no idea how I am supposed to wait until the 4th book's pub date.

The story is based on King Midas and his golden touch. Auren is King Midas' "gold-touched favored." She has apparently been turned to gold by him, and she lives in a gilded cage in a golden palace. Sounds totally normal... The opening ...more
