What Members Thought
Twisty! Scheming, lying, backstabbing, plotting, dastardly actions. Excellent! I went into this thinking it would be derivative- the Hunger games had been mentioned- it’s definitely part of the Tournament/ last one standing trope but it’s all it’s own (I thought). It was certainly a compulsive read and surpassed my expectations.

One of my all time favorite plotlines is a death game, where you win or you die. The stories tend to be intense, action packed, and entertaining so when I saw this compared to Hunger Games I was all in. I think the premise is great and I liked the four main characters, but the pacing is really all over the place and there wasn't enough excitement for me.

While I understood most characters motivations and actions, there was only one I really cared about.
But I'll admit I did cry, especially at the end.
I still have a lot of questions. 😭 ...more

Thank you to Netgalley, Tor, and Macmillan Audio for an arc of this book!
Every 20 years, the blood moon rises and seven families put forth a champion to compete in a tournament. The prize for winning? Exclusive access to High Magic, the most powerful kind. Losing? Death.
This book was delightfully dark! I loved that there are 4 different character pov's. Sometimes multiple pov's can kind of confuse a story and lessen the character building, but I think it went really well for this one, ...more

HOLY MOLY. This was a roller coaster ride for sure! Thank you to Netgalley for sending me a copy of this in an exchange for an honest review. Literally HUNGER GAMES PLUS MAGIC. Say less. I loved this from the very first chapter. Plot twists. Villains. Magic. Wonderful world building. The character development was on point. This was everything I needed and wanted in this moment. And can I just say….I LOVE Alistair. I need more and I need it now!
This was a solid 4-star read, read 300 pages in one sitting. I really enjoyed the narrator of the audiobook as well. I liked the different cast of characters, but it was missing something. It was slightly giving me Hunger Games vibes which I liked, but really nothing stands up to that in my mind when it comes to tournaments/trials/challenges. I need to read this sequel to see whether it's a good duology overall
