Though admittedly not as action-packed as the first installment, I still quite enjoyed this sequel in the Legacy of Orisha series. The writing is still fantastic and the world-building/magic system are really well done and complex.
The plot was problematic in a few ways that definite pulled down my enjoyment. There were several instances where it felt like things were running in circles. The same conflicts occurred over and over again with no progress in any direction. That grew a bit frustratin ...more

31/2 stars but rounding up. The first book. Children of Blood and Bone was amazing. This is the 2nd book in the series - and you definitely need to read them in order. I really liked this book - but not as much as the first one. If you can - listen to the audiobook. You'll get more immersed and connected to the story - I promise you. I must admit, I wasn't nearly as obsessed with this one as the first. I felt most of the characters did things that seemed ooc for them: Amari, Zelie, Inan. It was still a good story, but also not as fun and adventurous as the first. The twist ending seemed contrived. I'll still read the next one, but I feel disappointed that I waited this long and this is what I got.
