Though this is intended as a sequel to The Handmaid's Tale, it needs to be read with a different perspective and a different set of expectations. Those who appreciated the ending of The Handmaid's Tale and value the ambiguity of that should not read this book as it will absolutely create some spoilers.

It looks like people either loved or hated this follow up to The Handmaid's Tale - I loved it. I didn't love The Handmaid's Tale. The different POVs held my attention - especially from Lydia who was around from the beginning of the movement.

I loved this book! I have long waiting to find out how Gilliad began, and through the back story of Aunt Lydia this is told. I also enjoyed that the story was told from two other viewpoints. One of a girl who lives in Gilliad and one girl from Canada who goes in to expose the goings on in Gilliad. This was a long awaited telling that should have been added to the first book, but I am more than happy to finally get to the bottom of all of it.
