Loved this! My favourite of the Grishaverse so far, the story is set 3 years after the defeat of the Darkling. Nicholai is far and away the most charismatic main character we have had from Bardugo, but we get to see a more vulnerable side to him and to Zoya too. It was a great pleasure to see the return of Nina; her first few chapters, still very much grieving Matthias , were heartbreaking. We also have others from Alina’s team- Genya and David, Alekt. This book was so good, the team work from S ...more

I am so happy to be back in the Grisha world! Nikolai and Nina are great characters and I loved seeing what they're up to after the previous series. This is split between Nikolai, Nina, and Zoya's points of view, though Nikolai and Zoya are together for most of the book while Nina is off on her own.

Feels like I’ve had this book on my TBR forever, mostly as I was waiting for the series to finish. Worth the wait? I’d say yes and no as I felt a bit of a disconnect from a lot of the characters and backstory. It’s been a few years since reading the Grisha trilogy and then Six of Crows and so it certainly wasn’t as powerful or meaningful as I’m sure it could have been if all that was fresh in my mind. In fact the one new character I really grew to love got killed anyways and I’m a bit devastated ...more

King Nikolai still bares the scars of the Ravkan Civil War. The dark magic is still inside him and is growing stronger. Wanting the best for his country, Nikolai sets out to try and rid himself of the dark magic within him.

This book took me a long time to get into. I was confused at first feeling like I had missed something from the previous books or simply had forgotten, but eventually things started to make more sense. But, still yet, this is a big book and it took a long time to build things
