I was raised in a house without religion. Religious influences, perhaps (we celebrate Christmas and Easter, but it is really more an excuse for family to get together and have some quality time than anything else), but my family is decidedly not religious. Engaging, interesting but somehow incomplete. Wright begins with a fascinating account of L. Ron Hubbard's life leading up to Scientology and paints a vivid picture of how his mind kickstarted the operation. After that, things become haphazard, it beocomes a somewhat incongruent timeline of others who were pulled into his orbit. I'm not quite sure how to rate this book. While I find this is an exhaustive look at Scientology, it is another thing to want to read 400+ pages about a delusional psychopath and the abuses perpetrated by him and his "church." And let me save you the time of reading the footnotes, as the Church of Scientology probably denies that this book even exists.
