Wolfsgate in Cat Porter Fans and Readers

I rarely read historical fiction, but I loved Cat Porter's debut novel, LOCK & KEY, and was eagerly anticipating WOLFSGATE. This is definitely not your mother's historical romance!
It's very sexy, dark, and suspenseful with unexpected plot twists and turns that kept me on my toes and guessing throughout the book.
I knew this book wasn't going to be a light romantic romp, but I wasn't expecting to read about drug addiction, family betrayal, greed, and deception. Brandon and Justine are v 4 1/2 stars

It's very sexy, dark, and suspenseful with unexpected plot twists and turns that kept me on my toes and guessing throughout the book.
I knew this book wasn't going to be a light romantic romp, but I wasn't expecting to read about drug addiction, family betrayal, greed, and deception. Brandon and Justine are very complex, damaged characters who have suffered greatly and lost so much. At great personal risk, Justine rescues Brandon from the hospital where his cousin and uncle have kept him for the last two years, wasting away while they avail themselves of his inheritance. Justine seizes an opportunity to bring him home and nurse him back to health. The two get to know each other as adults as Brandon struggles to heal physically and to accept the changes and loss of the past four years, including learning which members of his family he can trust. Brandon is a very sympathetic character who has suffered family betrayal of the worst kind. He is understandably sad and mourns all that he has lost. His determination to exact revenge on those who have wronged him, however, leads to him inadvertently hurting Justine. He seems to think he can simply explain it away and all will be forgiven--not good enough. At least, not for me. I loved Justine and she didn't deserve to be treated badly by Brandon. She has suffered for years, living at Wolfsgate, subject to the dictates of her mean, addled stepfather and cruel stepbrother, William. In Justine, I was reminded of the realities of life for a woman in the 1790s; the limited choices, vulnerabilities and lack of autonomy. Justine is the smartest person in the room, and wise beyond her years, yet still retaining a sweet innocence. Her courage, strength, wit, determination to do the right thing, her instinct to protect those she cares about, and her refusal to let her stepfather and William get the best of her make her a character to admire and cheer for. Her relationship with Brandon quickly evolves from one of friendship to a passionate, yet uncertain, love affair. Wolfsgate is hotter than any of the historical romances I used to sneak from my mom's bookshelves. The love scenes are sexy and fun. Justine and Brandon truly complement one another and make a great couple.
There were several instances of lack of communication or miscommunication between Brandon and Justine, a trope that usually bothers me in romance. I'm happy to say that these situations were brief and were resolved before I lost patience. Even though I didn't like Brandon's plan for revenge, I wasn't entirely satisfied with the resolution.
WOLFSGATE is well-written, tightly plotted, romantic and sexy. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to all romance fans. I've heard from several friends that they don't read historical romance. Even though it's set in England in the 1790s, the plot and characters could easily work in a contemporary novel. Don't let the fact that it's an historical romance keep you from reading WOLFSGATE, you'll miss out on a truly wonderful book. ...more

Very impressed with this author! Loved this book! Kept me interested the entire time! Kept me wanting more that it made it hard to put down! An absolute MUST READ if you haven't yet! Looking forward to reading more from this author!

Pure Escapism

I have become a fan of Cat Porter after reading the first two books in her Lock and Key series. And I fell in love with Wolfsgate, also. One of those books you pick up on a quiet evening and read practically in one sitting. This book was a great escape after a very long week. I loved it!

4.5 - I loved this book. Historicals always scare me because a number of the ones I've read have lots of tragedy, and I like my escape to make me happy, not sad. I felt it had the right amount of feels and I was happy with the ending.
Cat Porter is one of my favorite authors yet I'd put this one off for a long time. I'm glad I finally read it and feel a little silly for waiting so long.
Beautiful story, steamy, and I'm hoping for more of this genre from Ms. Porter.
