All the feels - happy and sad - PERFECT!

This story was a real homerun for me. A billionaire meets girl-next-door contemporary romance that made me smile. Made me believe in hope, faith, and genuine kindness. Just an absolutely amazing fairy tale romance that hit all emotion buttons.

Shelves: romance, thriller

Can I just say, this is an SL Scott book like you haven’t read before. It’s got the swoonworthy hero and the quirky, independent heroine we know and love, but that’s where familiarity ends.

In this book, there’s a missed connection, and a lot of regret stemming from it. Singer Davis can’t help but remember the almost-kiss she shared with Ethan Everest on Brooklyn fire escape, while Ethan regrets the events that happened after, pulling him away from a girl who intrigued him. In this book, there’s a missed connection, and a lot of regret stemming from it. Singer Davis can’t help but remember the almost-kiss she shared with Ethan Everest on Brooklyn fire escape, while Ethan regrets the events that happened after, pulling him away from a girl who intrigued him. After running into each other on several occasion, he decides to put thought into action, and they start a sort of friendship.

There is a slow burn, both of them feeling their mutual attraction, but taking their time acting on it. But when they do… things heat up. I particularly liked the scene in the bathroom, as it marked a pivotal moment in their relationship.

Ethan has some demons he’s dealing with, though, and he worries for Singer and their relationship as a result. It takes a while for Singer to grasp the gravity of this, but when she does, there is nothing but heartbreak. This gave me emotional whiplash in the best of ways. I found myself laughing, swooning, and crying right along with Singer.

Ethan is intense. In his business, but also in his personal life. Once he decides on a course, he’s all in. In the case of Singer, it means he’s protective, slightly possessive, and hopelessly smitten. I loved reading about this. The analogy with the sun shining is just perfect. I found myself quoting that passage out loud to my boyfriend, feeling the urge to share its poignant phrasing.

I also like that Singer takes him at face value, not caring about his past or public persona. It adds a level of honesty to their relationship that you don’t always see when one of the couple outranks the other socially by leaps and bounds.

The supporting characters are also very interesting, most importantly Aaron, Melanie and Frank. However, even smaller roles, such as Chip or Lars, come with a certain depth you can expect from SL Scott. They all have a specific purpose in the story, and a role in Ethan’s and Singer’s lives. Melanie, especially, is the kind of friend you’d be lucky to have in your life. Then Aaron and Frank, they illustrate how Singer effortlessly gets people to care about her, as Ethan notes.

I would have liked to see a bit more of the ending. As it is now, it feels a bit glossed over. Perhaps the author will grace us with an outtake? ...more
