This months Sword and Laser pick, The Goblin Emperor is thus far my book of the year. The novel follows the life of Maia an 18 year old, half-elf prince who has lived in exile. When an airship accident kills the Emperor and all his other sons, Maia suddenly finds himself ruling an empire he knows nothing about, from a capital he barely remembers and with nobody he can trust.

If you like court intrigue with a side order of philology and fantasy worldbuilding, this could be the book for you.
I felt that perhaps the stakes weren't quite high enough, nor the consequences of Maia's degree of preparedness at all obvious. (Or was that a sly commentary on leadership, figureheads and bureaucracy?) That said, I did enjoy the ride.
I read this on Kindle, and was glad to have the X-Ray feature to lean on when I lost track of names. I only felt a little bit as if I were reading a ...more

Great character piece following a different path than most fantasy Chosen-one literature. I'm hoping for a sequel, or more in this setting.
