A bit formulaic in places - almost all the plot twists were just too perfectly obvious, but I still loved the writing - Abercrombie was firing on all cylinders, and crafts a great world, populates it with wonderful characters, and sends them crashing out with brilliant urgency. I immediately picked up and started the second book in the series, Half the World, and I'm halfway done with it after a few days. Half way in I wasn't sure I was sold on this book, but in the end Abercrombie's combination of his typical grim fantasy with characters who all have strong and reasonable motivations really won me over. I really loved all the grey here, nothing is black and white, their are no heroes or villains, everybody seems to have justifiable reasons for their actions.

Short, laser focused. Even being on the YA category, I got exactly what I enjoy about Abercrombie: big characters that never stand too far in either extreme. There's good and bad about everybody. Also, the set pieces. It's just so much fun!
