A modern space opera, one that manages to tell a story of galaxy-spanning import while maintaining a focus on the lives of only a handful of characters.

Dan Sylveste is investigating the lost Amarantin race when he makes a discovery; their species was wiped out just as they discovered space travel. But a planetary coup makes him a prisoner unable to investigate his discovery until the crew of an interstellar spacecraft arrives, demanding him to be turned over to them or they will destroy the plan
