The story was "eh." The gore was far too detailed but also far too casual---the gruesome and unnecessary descriptions were almost totally emotionless. The writing was surprisingly bad---a motheaten plot, extremely poor pacing, and stuff that was just plain confusing.

I have mixed feelings about this novel. As an adult I found it hard to get into and accept, yet I finished it. I kept wishing that a book like this existed when I was a teenage boy. Nothing like it did. I am happy that now a book about a gay superhero does exists - a superhero who has coming-of-age experiences that most gay teenager can identify with (except for the superhero part). I would give the novel five stars if I were still a teenage boy.

I really wanted to love this book. I really thought I'd love this book. And I enjoyed it enough to push a three-star rating to a four-star rating just because of the subject matter. Unfortunately, the writing was not very consistent. There were passages throughout the book that were extremely difficult to follow, necessitating reading sections several times, just to verify that I had not missed something or that I had somehow accidently skipped several pages. I grew up loving DC Comics superheroes, so I enjoyed the many nods to them here. Hero pokes a little fun while playing homage, but it also explores the "secret life" themes in engaging ways. ...more

I love this book and am not sure how I forgot to put it up here. It deals with all kinds of coming of age stuff, sexual orientation, abandonment by parents, distant fathers, and of course having super powers!
