This is a magnificent little book that may put one in mind of Byatt's *Possession.* Tightly plotted, HF is a marvelous piece of evidence for the proposition that (a) it's still possible to create unforgettable characters and to use them to drive a plot; and (b) that there's still room for literary fiction that isn't postmodernistically compromised, jargon-filled, reader-unfriendly, or simply precious/pretentious.
