Loved the "magic" aspect, the depictions of L.A. and Nebraska, the unique aspects of the characters' relationships and back story, even the dreams (which I'm often not fond of in novels). As always, there's a mesmerizing quality to her writing, while also something that keeps me distant from the characters.

A quick, easy read, but ultimately, not that satisfying. Patchett tells the story of the widow Sabine, who goes to the midwest to visit the family she never knew her husband had following his death. Sabine never came into three dimensions for me - clearly, she is consumed with longing to know her husband more fully - a gay man she had spent twenty years with as his assistant and friend and then a year as his wife following the death of his lover.
