Queer as folktales. This is the kind of book I've been craving to read for a long time--and not just because it features a multiracial, bisexual boy raised in a turn-of-the-twentieth-century whorehouse.
Yes, it's heavy-handed at times. A couple of key phrases are hammered home a bit too frequently. Race wanders in and out of the story like a bull that had sensitivity training before entering the china shop. And sex is presented either too bluntly or too abstractly.

This one took a long time to get through. It started out rough, as the narration is very stylized and poetic, but once I got accustomed to that, it picked up for a good middle bit... and then the ending disappointed again. The last few dozen pages are almost unintelligible, insofar as I don't actually know what's happening. I'm not a fan of that.

This was a crazy novel. It sorta made me feel uncomfortable at times. It revolved around sex and the author, given an opportunity, would relate any situation to a cock or cunt. I couldn't stop reading. For the trashy incestuous sex novel it is, it was well written with distinctive characters, plot twists, deep meaning and a home feel that grips you in. Its deals with a slew of discrimination issues and relates the past in an effortless fashion.
