I'm not sure of the historical accuracy of this book, but Michael Lowenthal's writing makes that point moot. Charity Girl tells the story of a young, poor Jewish woman whose lust becomes criminalized. It's the story we don't often hear, one of many voices from the past who may have been thought not worth telling, but the way her narrative fits into the larger system of patriarchy, especially during a time of war, is fascinating and illuminating.
