What Members Thought
Hollinghurst reminds me of Henry James (if James had sprinkled his novels with a lot of gay sex). And you either like James or find him a bore. I like him and I liked some of the same qualities in this book: the slow ponderous moves forward, the subtle yet sharp social criticism, the lovely sentences that you sometimes reread just for the pleasure of their beauty. We live in an impatient age and at times I wanted Hollinghurst to get on with it. But he's worth the time.
